Why Do We Need to Support The Space Program
Our space program has a significant
effect on our local economy, that is a given, but we need to support
the space program for many other reasons.
Some of these programs reasons include:
Education
The space program needs highly skilled
workers. Engineers,
Mathematicians, Computer Scientists, Scientist in just about every
discipline, and hundreds of skilled support staff.
This need drives the educational programs that are offered at
our local universities.
Those highly desired technical programs attract the best students to
our colleges and builds Florida's reputation for being able to
graduate students in career fields that are in high demand.
Supporting Industries
The space program supports many small
businesses in our area from small suppliers to local restaurants.
The salaries of the space program employees are used to keep
our home builders, grocery stores, drug stores, machine shops and
other types of small businesses the benefit from a strong space
program here in Florida.
What Are Some Of The Other Benefits Of The Space Program
The space program spawns many other
industries and supports
many other areas of our economy.
These spin offs provide jobs and help our local and national
economy. Some of the
areas are:
1.
At Home -
Cordless power tools and improved batteries, smoke detectors, water
purification systems, and home insulation among many others.
2.
Medical
- "Cool" laser heart surgery, space telescope used for cancer
research, body imaging, artificial limbs, infrared thermometer,
light emitting diodes, composite materials used in forceps, pill
sized transmitter, chromosome analysis, digital mammography, camera
on a chip among many others.
3.
The Mall -
UV sunglasses, image processing software used in the development of
cosmetics, lotions, anti-wrinkle creams.
4.
The Stadium -
protective equipment like football helmets, aerodynamic golf balls,
lightweight sports stadium roofs (made from space suit material)
5.
Airport -
Lightning Protection, windshear prediction, collision avoidance
among others.
6.
In the Museum -
Document protection, space images for archeology, space image
technology to discover masterpieces under other paintings, image
enhancements for items such as the dead sea scrolls.
7.
On the Farm -
Crop management from orbit, improvements in crop dusting to restrict
the distribution of chemicals, robotic sows to preserve pig
production on farms.
8.
Firehouse -
Firefighter Breathing system, Jaws of life for fire rescue
9.
Science -
Virtual Reality technologies,
improved laser technologies, global communications
10.
For Humankind -
Orbital systems to monitor temperatures, crops, fish movement,
wildlife movement, changing climate conditions, crop management,
ocean conditions, landmine destruction, oil spill cleanup,
monitoring marine life, forest fire management
What I Will Do In Washington
I will work to build the programs that
NASA can utilize to continue to advance our exploration into space.
I believe that money spent in the sciences benefits not only
Florida but the entire United States and the world.
This is money that is well spent.
